The Last Days of Pompeii by Edward Bulwer Lytton Book Review

I’m desperate to tell someone about this book!

It’s a coversion story. How can you go from worshiping Isis, Osiris, Jupiter and Zeus- Egyptian, Greek and Roman pantheon of gods, to Faith in the one true Father and his Son- Christus?

‘What think you of this new sect, which I am told has even a few proselytes in Pompeii, these followers of the Hebrew God — Christus?’

Isis Unveiled. She is the Holy Spirit. She is the Virgin Mary, she is the primary, perfect conduit, THE ORIGINAL PORTAL- THE WOMB-MAN.

FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT

Edward Bulwer Lytton makes the destruction of Pompeii a real pleasure to witness.

DECADENCE – APOCALYPSE – RESURRECTION

You must go through HELL to get to HEAVEN. The burnig scoria raining down from the flaming maw of mount Vesuvius. The perfect ROMAN avenue to the One True Faith. The beautiful city burns. The Aediles die in their bunkers with their gold. Glaucus, Ione, and Nydia flee to the water.

Sometimes the blaze lingered over the iron-grey heaps of scoria, covered in part with ancient mosses or stunted trees, as if seeking in vain for some gentler product of earth, more worthy of its ire; and sometimes leaving the whole of that part of the scene in darkness, the lightning, broad and sheeted, hung redly over the ocean, tossing far below, until its waves seemed glowing into fire; and so intense was the blaze, that it brought vividly into view even the sharp outline of the more distant windings of the bay, from the eternal Misenum, with its lofty brow, to the beautiful Sorrentum and the giant hills behind.

What is love?
LOVE IS SACRIFICE – plain and simple.

Yet this was the last night for the gay Pompeii! the colony of the hoar Chaldean! the fabled city of Hercules! the delight of the voluptuous Roman! Age after age had rolled, indestructive, unheeded, over its head; and now the last ray quivered on the dial-plate of its doom!

List of characters:

Glaucus: He’s rich, young, and handsome. The women love the Athenian. You will like him too. Although, you’re not sure why.

Ione: She’s the Lily of the Valley, the Virgin Mary, Isis Unveiled- her purity and pious perfection like dew drops on a budding flower. Grace in every movement. I was smitten with her- as was Glaucus. She loves Glaucus. But yet… what is love?

Nydia: The young blind slave. She loves Glaucus. Glaucus plays dumb. He purchases Nydia, gives her fine jewelry, and places her in his garden to make garlands of fine flowers. I love Nydia more than Ione.

Arbaces: The Egyptian Mystic. Old and wise in the Chaldean magicks. His oracles are always on point. Great tripods of smoking incense and crystal balls adorn his cavernous Pompeian mansion. He holds the most sensual parties. The licentious Sybarite. He must have Ione. Am I Arbaces or Glaucus?

Apaecides: Ione’s brother. He’s taken with the priesthood. Easily overcome by the Epicurean. He’s the convert, the lamb, the walking dead.

Julia: Rich daughter of Diomed. She doesn’t love Glaucus, but cannot allow her rival, Ione, to wed the finest man in town. She must consult the witch.

Orinthus: The Nazarene. A nascent Christian. He’s a zealot- He’s got ZEAL for the new Faith. Edward Bulwer Lytton makes it clear that the Christian Faith was born from Zeal. The zealots brought the Faith forward- And now all GMO Christians are making a living sacrifice to the CDC.

GOD BLESS.
